The Institute of Tissue Medicine and Pathology (ITMP) is an institution of the University of Bern, Switzerland with three major tasks: teaching, research and diagnostic service. In total, there are around 220 employees at the Institute. The ITMP provides an attractive setting to perform cutting-edge translational research in direct collaboration with pathologists and oncologists treating patients.

As of September 2025 or by arrangement, the directorate and TRU/TBB Division of ITMP is seeking a Data Scientist 60-80%.

Job Description:

You support tissue based and clinical (human tissue-based) research approaches of the ITMP, in collaboration with the Insel data science centre (IDSC). You work on the scientific data platforms of the IDSC and ITMP, collaborating with our researchers. We are looking for a highly motivated data scientist interested in understanding research questions and capable of querying the data lakes of the IDSC. Experience in working with sensitive data as well as with large language models are of ad-vantage. You are responsible for the development of our in-house research data-base. In the ITMP, you collaborate with our research bio-informaticians and our ICT–team.

Requirements

You have completed training as data scientist. You have experience in management of both clinical as well as in experimental data. You have good knowledge of databases. Previous experience with patient data is a plus. You are a team player, act responsibly, work independently, and with your own initiative to develop new techniques and projects. You are flexible, enjoy your work and value the interactions in a diverse, young team. You enjoy new things and building internal structures. Good knowledge of English is required.
